Sylvester Radiologist Named to Society of Breast Imaging Fellowship
Fernando Collado-Mesa, M.D., a radiologist at Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center, associate professor of radiology at University of Miami Miller School of Medicine, and medical director of the Breast Health Center at Jackson Memorial Hospital, has been elected to fellowship in the Society of Breast Imaging, based on his outstanding contributions and service to the field.
“It is an honor to receive this recognition for my clinical, research and teaching work in breast imaging, all of which I have had the privilege to conduct in collaboration with an outstanding group of colleagues here at UM,” said Dr. Collado-Mesa, who is the first member of the Department of Radiology to be named a fellow in the society.
Dr. Collado-Mesa joined the Department of Radiology at the Miller School in July 2010. He is an affiliate clinical research scientist at Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center’s Braman Family Breast Cancer Institute, and an affiliate of the Tumor Biology Program.
In the past decade, Dr. Collado-Mesa has focused his research on vital issues related to breast imaging, including health disparities and artificial intelligence. He is head of Innovation and Artificial Intelligence at the Department of Radiology, and recently earned a certification in “Artificial Intelligence in Health Care” from Massachusetts Institute of Technology’s Sloan School of Management Executive Education program.
Dr. Collado-Mesa is a member of the American College of Radiology’s Economics Committee in Breast Imaging and has participated, presented, and lectured at numerous state, national, and international meetings. Most recently, he was an invited speaker at the Ibero-American Society of Breast Imaging Virtual Encounters with Experts, in August. He is the author of more than 40 journal articles and is a reviewer for six professional journals.
A passion for teaching
He is also passionate about teaching and serves as associate director for the Radiology Residency Program at Jackson Memorial Hospital.
Dr. Collado-Mesa received his medical degree from the University of Medical Sciences of Havana, Cuba, and completed a residency in medical epidemiology at the National School of Public Health in Havana. He is a former public health research fellow at the Pan-American Health Organization, and academic visitor in the Department of Epidemiology and Public Health at University College in London.
After migrating to the United States at age 36, he obtained ECFMG certification while working full time, and went on to complete a residency in diagnostic radiology at Louisiana State University Health Sciences Center in New Orleans, and at University of South Florida Morsani College of Medicine in Tampa. He then completed a breast imaging fellowship at Mount Sinai Medical Center in Miami Beach.
Based in Reston, Virginia, the Society for Breast Imaging is open to board-eligible or board-certified radiologists, medical physicists, and other medical professionals with an interest in breast imaging. The society’s core purpose is to save lives and minimize the impact of breast cancer. Its core values include patient-centered and evidence-based care, excellence in education, scientific integrity, and respect for diversity and inclusiveness.
