Showcase Honors Quality Improvement and Patient Safety Projects
UHealth – the University of Miami Health System and Jackson Health System collaborated with the Miller School’s Office of Graduate Medical Education and the Committee of Interns and Residents to hold the first Quality Improvement and Patient Safety Showcase on May 15.

More than 40 posters were submitted by residents, faculty members and employees, whose projects focused on ways to improve the quality of care and safety for patients, guests, faculty and staff.
Submissions included work performed at UHealth facilities, Jackson Health System and the Veterans Affairs Medical Center and ranged from Six Sigma DMAIC (Define, Measure, Analyze, Improve and Control) projects to PDSA (Plan-Do-Study-Act) methodologies.

Resident/Fellow Competition
1st Prize: Maksym Doroshenko, M.D. — Postoperative Narcotics: How much is too much?
2nd Prize: Christian Petrauskis, M.D. — Standardizing Treatment of Asthma Patients at Holtz Children’s Hospital: A Quality Improvement Project.
3rd Prize: Rachel Manalo, M.D. — Myocardial Strain Imaging as a New Tool in the Assessment of Ventricular Function in Pediatric Patients: A Quality Improvement Project.
Employee/Faculty Competition
1st Prize: Christina Karapelou, M.S.N., ARNP — Improving Cycle Time between Evaluation and Listing for Pre-emptive Kidney Patients.
The QuIPS “Star” Award — for outstanding achievement in Graduate Medical Education’s monthly QuIPS (Quality Improvement Project Support) program, which provides workshop-style education and experiential learning in projects led by residents or fellows — was presented to Christina Cheung, M.D. (represented by Mora Puertolas-Lopez, M.D.), and Iahn Cajigas, M.D., Ph.D.
Faculty members are invited to join Graduate Medical Education’s Subcommittee on Quality and Safety. The subcommittee’s goal is to increase the knowledge and engagement of residents and fellows in quality and safety across our health system. More information can be obtained by contacting Yvonne M.
