Recent Graduates Win Minority Scholarship Award From the American Physical Therapy Association
Three recent University of Miami graduates won Minority Scholarship Awards from the American Physical Therapy Association. The organization rewards those students who participate in minority affairs activities and services, demonstrate the potential for superior achievements in the physical therapy profession, excel academically, and exemplify professionalism as a future physical therapist.
Brianna Sade Scott, DPT, a recent graduate of the University of Miami Class of 2019, was awarded the prestigious APTA Minority Scholarship award for 2019. Dr. Scott’s service activities include student coordinator of the physical therapy pro bono clinic, health missionary work in Belize with the International Society of Prosthetics and Orthotics, service to the Florida Physical Therapy Association, and volunteerism with the UM Wolfson DOCS program. She continues to speak nationally in the area of diversity and inclusion for new professionals.
The American Physical Therapy Association awarded Minority Scholarship Awards for 2020 to two graduates of the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine – Alicia Bornemann, DPT, and Juan Gonzalez, DPT.
During her DPT studies, Dr. Bornemann served as the co-coordinator of the physical therapy pro-bono clinic and held national student leadership positions with the American Physical Therapy Association serving as the Secretary of the Florida Student SIG of the FPTA and the state student representative at the national APTA House of Delegates. She was also instrumental in the planning of the FPTA student conclave hosted by the University of Miami.
While studying at the University of Miami, Dr. Gonzalez served as co-coordinator of the UM physical therapy pro-bono clinic and made significant contributions in research in the area of chronic disease and pain management in minority populations. His research has been presented at the national scientific conference of the APTA and the World Confederation of Physical Therapy. He is continuing his research training in the Ph.D. program at the University of Miami and provides clinical service in the physical therapy clinic at the UHealth Advanced Institute for Pain Management.
