Pubbelly Sushi Supports Sylvester Wig Program

For the third year in a row, the popular Miami sushi chain Pubbelly Sushi launched an “Eat Pink” initiative to highlight Breast Cancer Awareness Month and raise funds for Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center, a part of UHealth – University of Miami Health System.

“We feel incredibly grateful to the community for helping us support Sylvester patients during Breast Cancer Awareness month,” said Jorge Mijangos, director of culinary operations for Pubbelly Sushi. “Every contribution helps to make a real difference in the lives of patients.”

Throughout October, the restaurant added pink rice paper to their popular “Butter Krab” roll. A portion of the proceeds from each sale went to Sylvester’s Cancer Support Services program, to provide wigs for cancer patients and survivors. Thanks to the monthlong fundraiser, Pubbelly representatives presented a check for $8,000 to Sylvester in the cancer center’s courtyard on Nov. 4.

“The wig program has a significant impact on survivors,” said Carmen Calfa, M.D., breast medical oncologist at Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center. “They are so happy when they find the wig that they connect with because it helps them to feel whole again.”

Sylvester is South Florida’s only NCI-designated cancer center, and it is the only nationally ranked cancer hospital, based on rankings by U.S. News & World Report.

“We’re so appreciative of Pubbelly Sushi’s efforts to help our patients along their cancer journey by helping to restore not only their hope but also a sense of normalcy,” said Stephen D. Nimer, M.D., director of Sylvester, Oscar de la Renta Endowed Chair in Cancer Research, and executive dean for research at the Miller School of Medicine.

Pubbelly Sushi says that partnering with Sylvester to help positively impact the lives of locals fighting breast cancer is a priority.

“It’s an honor and a privilege to partner with an organization that goes above and beyond to care for our neighbors fighting this disease,” said Mijangos.
