Poster Symposium Highlights Work of Medical Students and Residents

The work of several University of Miami Miller School of Medicine students and residents was highlighted at the Palm Beach County Medical Society’s James J. Byrnes Future of Medicine Poster Symposium, held February 7 at the Kravis Center in West Palm Beach.

Among them was third-year M.D./MPH student Nicole Lin, who won second place for her project “Prevalence of Physical and Psychological Trauma in an Asylum Seeking Cohort,” and internal medicine resident Sameer Gupta, M.D., who won third place in the clinical vignette category for his project “Tacrolimus Associated Posterior Reversible Encephalopathy Syndrome in Critically Ill Liver Transplant Recipients.”

The students who presented at the symposium are part of the four-year M.D./M.P.H. program offered at the Miller School’s regional medical campus, and the residents represented the internal medicine residency training program at JFK Medical Center in Atlantis. They were joined by students and residents from several other medical institutions, including Florida Atlantic University, Nova Southeastern University, and the Palm Beach County Health Department.

“The symposium represents many of the medical education programs in our community,” said Gauri Agarwal, M.D., assistant professor of medicine and associate regional dean for medical curriculum, who coordinates the symposium along with Tulisa LaRocca, M.D. “It’s an event that exhibits our community’s collaborative efforts in scientific discovery and allows us to learn from significant cases that will improve care for our patients.”

Named after James J. Byrnes, a former family medicine clerkship director at the Miller School, the symposium is part of the society’s annual Future of Medicine Summit and offers students, residents, fellows and other physician-scholars an opportunity to share significant research and interesting clinical vignettes.
