Ophthalmology Times Ranks Bascom Palmer Eye Institute #1 in Overall Programs, Patient Care, and Education

Bascom Palmer Eye Institute has once again been ranked as having the best overall ophthalmology program in the United States by Ophthalmology Times. The Institute also received the number one ranking in clinical (patient) care and in residency training. The annual rankings of the top ophthalmology programs in the United States are compiled from an online survey of the chairs/directors and the residency program directors.

Ophthalmology Times has ranked the nation’s best programs 18 times since 1996. Bascom Palmer has been ranked the Best Overall Program each year for the past six years, and for the first time, it shares the number one ranking with the Johns Hopkins Wilmer Eye Institute.

This year also marks the 14th time Bascom Palmer is recognized as having the best clinical (patient) care in the country, and the 13th time its residency program has been ranked in the top spot. Bascom Palmer’s research program was ranked the fourth in the nation in this year’s survey.

“Bascom Palmer’s recognition as the best in the nation is a wonderful tribute to the entire team – the excellent physicians and talented staff who deliver compassionate patient care, educate students and ophthalmic professionals, and propel vision research by making exciting discoveries in our laboratories that advance ophthalmology and patient care around the world,” said Eduardo C. Alfonso, M.D., director of Bascom Palmer Eye Institute and chair of the Department of Ophthalmology at the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine and the University of Miami Health System. Dr. Alfonso holds the Kathleen and Stanley J. Glaser Chair in Ophthalmology.

Since its founding, Bascom Palmer has been recognized as having an optimal learning environment for young ophthalmologists. Its residency program, under the leadership of Steven J. Gedde, M.D., consistently attracts the most talented young physicians entering the field of ophthalmology. Each year, more than 550 young physicians apply for one of seven spots in the residency program.

“Bascom Palmer continues to attract the best and the brightest medical students into its residency program each year. All of our residents are highly accomplished, even before they begin their formal training with us. Our mission is to create a learning environment that allows them to fully realize their immense potential,” said Dr. Gedde, Bascom Palmer’s vice chair for education, residency program director, and holder of the John C. Clarkson, M.D. Chair in Ophthalmology.

Bascom Palmer Eye Institute is also ranked the #1 eye hospital in the United States by U.S. News & World Report, an honor it has received 19 times. The Institute’s ophthalmology residency program is also ranked best in the U.S. by Doximity, an online professional network for U.S. physicians.

“I am so very proud of our physicians, residents, fellows, nurses, technicians and other staff members who are faced with the challenge of delivering vision care during the COVID-19 pandemic,” said Dr. Alfonso. “Many of them risked their own personal safety to assist our patients, maintain our facilities, and keep our research and education programs going. The world has changed dramatically this year, and Bascom Palmer’s dedicated team of clinicians, scientists, and educators will continue to focus on the future in keeping with our tradition of leadership in vision beyond 2020. These honors recognize their excellence and dedication to our patients.”
