National Liver Transplant Expert Joins Miller School Faculty
David Goldberg, M.D., MSCE, has joined the faculty of the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine as associate professor of medicine in the Division of Digestive Health and Liver Diseases.
Dr. Goldberg completed medical school at Mount Sinai School of Medicine and then did his internal medicine residency at New York Presbyterian Hospital-Columbia University Medical Center. He then went on to complete his fellowships in gastroenterology and transplant hepatology at the University of Pennsylvania. During his training, Dr. Goldberg also earned a Master of Science degree in clinical epidemiology.
Dr. Goldberg spends 80% of his effort conducting epidemiology and health services research in the areas of chronic liver disease, hepatocellular carcinoma, organ transplantation, and organ donation. He has received grant funding from the National Institutes of Health along with several investigator-initiated research awards. He is currently the principal investigator on an NIDDK-funded R01 focused on developing new models to predict survival for patients with end-stage liver disease in order to change the way patients are prioritized for a liver transplant. He is also the co-PI on an NIDDK-funded U34 that is a planning grant to develop a multi-year, multi-center clinical trial of transplanting kidneys from hepatitis C-infected deceased donors into hepatitis C-negative patients.
Dr. Goldberg has published more than 100 peer-reviewed manuscripts, including a first-author manuscript in the New England Journal of Medicine of the first clinical trial transplanting kidneys from hepatitis C-infected deceased donors into hepatitis C-negative patients. He has also published seminal papers on issues related to surveillance for liver cancer (hepatocellular carcinoma) and post-transplant survival of patients transplanted for hepatocellular carcinoma.
His work has been featured in the New York Times, TIME magazine, and NBC Nightly News. A native of Hollywood, Florida, Dr. Goldberg is excited to return to South Florida with his wife Kathryn and daughter Madeline.
