Incoming Class is Welcomed with White Coats, Stethoscopes

As thousands of parents, siblings and other loved ones clapped and cheered virtually, the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine Class of 2025 crossed the stage at the Watsco Center on Aug. 20 for the John G. Clarkson Freshman White Coat and Pinning Ceremony.

Miller School of Medicine Class of 2025 students take part Aug. 20 in the John G. Clarkson Freshman White Coat and Pinning Ceremony.

The annual enthusiastic welcome to the Miller School first-year class was once again held amid safety precautions due to the ongoing pandemic, but it didn’t dim the students’ official entry to the medical profession.

As their names were called, the students donned their new white coats, which were provided primarily by Miller School alumni who know first-hand the importance of support during those critical early days of medical school.

The Miller School’s Medical Alumni Association, as well as other donors, gave every student in the Class of 2025 Miller-branded stethoscopes as a way of welcoming them to the school and helping them forge a connection with the alumni.

The ceremony is one of the most important rites of passage for first-year students, as they took the Hippocratic Oath wearing their new white coats.
