Faculty Recognized by Florida Physical Therapy Association for Excellence in Teaching

Each year, the Florida Physical Therapy Association honors a selection of instructors who have exhibited an exemplary commitment to education. In 2020, two faculty from the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine physical therapy department made the grade.

Bryon Smith, P.T., D.P.T.

Bryon Smith, P.T., D.P.T., board-certified clinical specialist in orthopedic physical therapy at the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine, won the 2020 Excellence in Academic Teaching Award from the Florida Physical Therapy Association (FPTA). He has been a faculty member in the Department of Physical Therapy, teaching several courses in the Doctor of Physical Therapy curriculum and assisting in gross anatomy for medical students, since 2007.


Sabine Gempel, D.P.T.

Sabine Gempel, D.P.T., board-certified clinical specialist in cardiovascular and pulmonary physical therapy, won the 2020 Outstanding Clinical Instructor Award from the Florida Consortium of Clinical Educators, part of the FPTA.  Dr. Gempel has been a faculty member since 2019 and serves as a clinical education coordinator and residency faculty member. She provides clinical service in the Cardiac and Pulmonary Rehabilitation Programs at UHealth Tower.
