Dr. Steven L. Cohn Elected to Royal College of Physicians

Steven L. Cohn, M.D., professor emeritus in the Department of Medicine, was recently elected as a fellow of the Royal College of Physicians (RCP) of London.

Since 1518, the RCP has played a significant role in public health, medical education, and research in the United Kingdom and throughout the world. The American College of Physicians (ACP) and the RCP share an unfailing commitment to quality and excellence in delivering health care, patient respect, and physician support.

Dr. Cohn, a Master of the American College of Physicians (MACP) and Senior Fellow of the Society of Hospital Medicine (SHM), has joined an elite group, as only a select number of MACPs are selected as fellowship candidates into the Royal College. Of the ACP’s 160,000 members, less than 1% are designated as masters, and only a small number of masters will become RCP fellows.

“As an American master and a British fellow, I have had a rewarding career contributing to the specialty of perioperative medicine and training the next generation of master-class physicians,” Dr. Cohn said. “As an RCP fellow, I look forward to ongoing collaborations with my perioperative colleagues in the U.K. and Europe.”

Continuous Contributions

Although “retired” since 2018, Dr. Cohn continues to give perioperative presentations at national society meetings, including the ACP, SHM, and the Society for Perioperative Assessment and Quality Improvement (SPAQI). Dr. Cohn still shares his knowledge in the field through grand rounds presentations in multiple academic centers, including the Cleveland Clinic, MD Anderson, and Robert Wood Johnson.

During the past year, he also had virtual speaking engagements internationally at the McGill University General Internal Medicine Symposium on Perioperative Medicine in Canada, the ACP 53rd Annual Meeting – Chile Chapter, and the Hospital Medicine Congress in Brazil.

Dr. Cohn is currently updating his preoperative cardiac risk evaluation topic on UpToDate along with two online modules on perioperative cardiac risk for SHM Consults. His third book, Decision Making in Perioperative Medicine – Clinical Pearls, published by McGraw Hill and the ACP, continues to be a best-seller on Amazon. It is also available through the Calder Library as part of Access Medicine.
