Dr. Pankaj Agrawal Is Appointed Chief of the Division of Neonatology

Pankaj Agrawal, M.D., MMSc, has been appointed chief of the Division of Neonatology in the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine Department of Pediatrics and Jackson Health System. He will assume this role on February 12, 2023.

Dr. Agrawal comes to the Miller School and Jackson from Boston Children’s Hospital, where he was the director of the Neonatal Genomic Program, which is focused on understanding the role of genomic technologies in newborn care and screening. He was also the medical director of the hospital’s Manton Center for Gene Discovery, where he worked to determine the genetic and molecular bases of various rare and unexplained conditions.

Previously, Dr. Agarwal served as the Merton Bernfield Chair in Newborn Medicine and associate professor of pediatrics at Harvard Medical School. He is an associate member of the Broad Institute of MIT and Harvard, a consortium that brings together researchers from various disciplines to accelerate genomic discoveries and conquer diseases.

After obtaining his medical degree from the University and Government Medical College in Baroda, India, Dr. Agrawal did a pediatric residency at SSG Hospital and a senior residency in neonatology at the Postgraduate Institute of Medical Education and Research, both in India. He was a resident and senior resident in newborn medicine at Monash Medical Center in Australia, after which he was a clinical fellow in pediatrics at Boston Children’s Hospital and Harvard Medical School, where he also received his master’s degree in biostatistics, epidemiology, clinical trials, and genomics.

Dr. Agrawal is the principal investigator for the Virtual Genome Center in Infant Health (VIGOR) Project, funded by a $5.4 million R01 from the National Institutes of Health (NIH). He has been the recipient of multiple NIH grants as a PI and investigator, including numerous R01s, a U19, and a UM1. Dr. Agrawal has received several awards for his work, including from the Society for Pediatric Research and the American Federation for Medical Research, and has served on study sections for NIH’s National Human Genome Research Institute, the Department of Defense Congressionally Directed Medical Research Programs, and the national research agencies of France and of the Netherlands.

Dr. Agarwal has published more than 140 articles in high-impact journals including the New England Journal of Medicine, JCI, the American Journal of Human Genetics, PLOS Genetics, Annals of Neurology, Neurology, JAMA Neurology, and Pediatrics. He is a member of the Society for Pediatric Research and the American Pediatric Society.
