Clinical pathologist Laurence Briski, M.D., has been named director of the Thoracic Pathology Service in the Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine at the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine.

“It is with a great sense of pride and enthusiasm that the Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine announces Dr. Briski’s new role,” said Merce Jorda, M.D., Ph.D., M.B.A., professor and Joseph R. Coulter, Jr. Chair of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine, who presided over the Departmental Executive Leadership Committee that selected Dr. Briski.

Dr. Briski joined the department in 2020 after completing a prestigious fellowship in thoracic pathology at the University of Michigan Health System. He attended medical school at the University of Michigan where he also completed his residency in pathology and became board certified in clinical and anatomic pathology. He subsequently served as chief fellow in oncologic surgical pathology at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center.

Dr. Briski prides himself on his skills as a pathologist and believes that this appointment reaffirms his commitment not only to the mission of the Miller School, but also his dedication to educating others. Dr. Briski happily assumed the role of educator during his fellowship training programs. He currently serves as associate program director of the Genitourinary Fellowship Program and actively works with both residents and fellows. His knowledge base, communication skills, and demeanor have made him a favorite of current trainees.

Dr. Briski’s research interests include oncologic thoracic pathology, non-neoplastic lung pathology, and general oncologic surgical pathology.

Dr. Briski says he has been motivated by the welcome he has received from the department and the UHealth community as a whole, and he is very enthusiastic about his new appointment.

“I am honored to accept the role of director of the Thoracic Pathology Service at the University of Miami Health System,” he said. “First and foremost, I would like to thank my esteemed colleague, Dr. Julio Poveda, for his hard and enduring work as outgoing director, and I hope to continue the excellent standard that he set. I am very excited and looking forward to the opportunity to grow our service and further help to establish it as the preeminent thoracic pathology service in South Florida.”
