Dr. Idrees, Dr. Waggoner Are Newest Additions to Clinical Pathology Faculty

Dr. Afshan Idrees and Dr. Derek Waggoner will serve as Clinical Assistant Professors, joining the Department of Pathology & Laboratory Medicine as the two new faculty members in the clinical pathology service.

“These two new faculty members bring a wealth of experience of our clinical pathology program,” department chair Dr. Merce Jorda said. “Not only will they enrich our ability to provide excellence in patient care, they will also be amazing teachers and mentors to our residents and fellows.”

Dr. Idrees has been appointed as the Medical Director of the Hematology Laboratory at Jackson Health System and UHealth as well as Co-Medical Director of the Hemostasis Laboratory at UHealth. She comes to Miami from the Emory University School of Medicine where she served as the Medical Director of Coagulation Laboratory and Assistant Medical Director of Hematology Laboratory and Transfusion Medicine. She was Rotation Director of Lab Administration for Emory Pathology Residents, Hematopathology and Transfusion Medicine Fellows.

Dr. Idrees completed fellowships in Laboratory Medicine at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center, Transfusion Medicine at University of Florida, College of Medicine, Hematopathology at H. Lee Moffitt Cancer Center and was a Visiting Clinical Fellow in Hematopathology at National Cancer Institute, National Institute of Health. She completed her residency in the Department of Pathology & Cell Biology at the University of South Florida. Dr. Idrees is Board Certified in Blood Banking/Transfusion Medicine, Hematopathology, and Anatomic Pathology and Clinical Pathology.

Dr. Waggoner received his Ph.D. in Chemistry from Old Dominion University in Norfolk, Va., where he also served as a post-doctoral research fellow where he developed a strong background in toxicology.  He then completed a postdoctoral fellowship in Clinical Chemistry at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. He served as the Director of the Core Laboratory and Acting Director of the Point of Care Testing and Special Chemistry Laboratories in the McLendon Clinical Laboratories at UNC Health in Chapel Hill. Dr. Waggoner is board certified in Clinical Chemistry by the National Registry of Certified Chemists.
