Dr. Alberto Caban-Martinez Reappointed to NIOSH Construction Sector Council

Alberto J. Caban-Martinez, D.O., Ph.D., M.P.H., assistant professor of public health sciences and deputy director of the Miami Occupational Research Group, has been reappointed to the Construction Sector Council of the National Institute for Occupational Health and Safety.

The Construction Sector Council is comprised of private, government and academic entities. Its goal is to stimulate innovative occupational health and safety research, and improve workplace practices and well-being. Its members identify and prioritize broad occupational safety and health research objectives for the nation’s workforce. To be selected for council membership, a person must have a proven research and practice reputation within the field of occupational health and safety.

“It is an honor and privilege to serve on the Construction Sector Council and assist in shaping the research objectives that will impact the health and safety of our nation’s construction workforce,” said Caban-Martinez, who was originally appointed to the council in 2011.

About 10 million workers are employed in the U.S. construction industry, and they face risks of fatal and non-fatal injuries resulting from falls from elevated surfaces, struck-by incidents, and musculoskeletal disorders, as well as illnesses from noise, silica, and other exposures. The Construction Sector Council will design a research agenda through information exchange, collaboration, and enhanced dissemination and implementation of solutions.

“Dr. Caban-Martinez’s reappointment is further affirmation of his growing national and international reputation in the field of occupational health and safety,” said David J. Lee, Ph.D., professor of public health sciences and director of the Miami Occupational Research Group. “He will continue to bring a unique perspective in occupational health disparities, musculoskeletal disorders and surveillance in this segment of the U.S. workforce.”
