Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine Faculty and Trainees the Take the Lead at the USCAP Annual Conference
On the second day of the 112th annual meeting of the United States and Canada Academy of Pathology (USCAP) in New Orleans, Elizabeth Montgomery, M.D., professor in the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine, summed up the department’s and the Miller School’s contributions: “It’s a UM meeting.”
As the special Maude Abbott honoree, who provided a rousing kickoff lecture on March 11 to over 4,000 attendees, Dr. Montgomery had a unique perspective on what is arguably the most acclaimed pathology conference of the year. Internationally recognized for her expertise in gastrointestinal and soft tissue pathology, and as the vice chair of faculty development and mentoring, she said, “I was honored to lead the charge for the department and applaud all the faculty members and trainees who showed off our amazing program in pathology.”
Andrew Rosenberg, M.D., professor and vice chair of faculty affairs and a world-renowned expert in bone and soft tissue pathology, had the honor of presenting a special “Luminaries in Pathology” lecture. A pathologist attending the USCAP conference commented on Twitter that when Dr. Rosenberg took the stage and wowed the attendees with his presentation, “Using Human Intelligence (HI) in the Diagnosing Neoplasms and Diseases of the Skeleton,” the lecture hall looked “like a rock concert.”
The efforts of Drs. Montgomery and Rosenberg were matched by other Miller School participants and contributors, including Monica Garcia-Buitrago, M.D., professor and director of the Gastrointestinal Pathology Service, who co-moderated a major platform session. In addition, platform presentations, interactive microscopy sessions, and special short courses were also presented by Jaylou Velez-Torres, M.D.; Julio Poveda, M.D.; Yi Zhu, M.D., Ph.D.; Rhonda Yantiss; and Andre Pinto, M.D.
Dr. Montgomery had the last word on the final day of the conference with a special session on infectious disease pathology.
The education team was proud to see many trainees in action, with a total of more than 20 platform and poster presentations this year — a departmental record.
“This is really a special conference where our trainees can both get experience in presenting their work and also have an opportunity to interact with some of the best pathologists in the world,” said Carmen Gomez, M.D., professor and vice chair of education. “In addition, our program has an ideal opportunity to attract new applicants for our many specialized fellowships.” To this point, the education team staffed a well-received booth at the fellowship fair and also hosted a reception for current trainees and alumni.
The USCAP conference also marked the second time the administrative unit, headed by Senior Administrative Officer Melissa Stedman, staffed an exhibit promoting the department’s robust consultative services.

Coulter, Jr. Chair of the Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine. “The pathology program has elevated its already prominent standing in pathology on this international stage.
