Career Program Focuses on Mentoring and Negotiation in Academia

Expert career coach Valerie Williams, Ph.D., M.P.A., put a spotlight on mentoring and negotiation in academia at the 2018 SEEDS “You Choose” Leadership Award program, hosted by Women in Academic Medicine (WIAM) and the Office of Diversity and Inclusion at the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine.

Williams is vice provost for academic affairs and faculty development at the University of Oklahoma Health Sciences Center.  Her expertise stems from longstanding work with early- and mid-career faculty members at the Health Sciences Center and extensive leadership service on a number of Association of American Medical Colleges professional development committees and programs. She shared that expertise with Miller School faculty, staff, residents and students during two workshops: “Mentoring: An Action Verb for Developmental Partnership” and “Negotiation Matters: A Primer for Peace & Productivity in Academic Life.”

Program participants learned skills and strategies for developing mentor/mentee relationships and preparing for negotiating in higher education. Comments from the post-program evaluations included, “I appreciated learning perspectives from both sides of the mentor/mentee relationship and understanding mentoring competencies” and “What a dynamic speaker! I now have a new framework for negotiating.”

The next program, sponsored by Merck, will be held at noon on Thursday, May 3. Dawn Tice, M.B.A., RN, executive director of ambulatory clinical operations at Main Line Health in Philadelphia, and a professional speaker on health care topics at Merck-sponsored events, will present “A Series on Operationalizing Change for Quality Improvement in Health Care.” Additional information and registration are available at https://qualityimprovementhealthcare.eventbrite.com.
