41st Neonatology Conference Draws Global Audience of Pediatric Professionals
Medical professionals from all over the world who care for critically ill newborn infants gathered in November at the Loews Miami Beach for the 41st International Miami Neonatology Conference, sponsored by the Miller School of Medicine and presented by the Department of Pediatrics’ Division of Neonatology.

The keynote speaker, John Tyson, M.D., M.P.H., the Michelle Bain Distinguished Professor of Medicine and Public Health, and vice dean for clinical research and evidence-based medicine, at the McGovern Medical School at the University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston, presented “Learning Healthcare and the Neonatologist.”
This year’s conference also featured several of the leading national and international neonatal experts, who shared the latest research and best practices in caring for newborns in a series of presentations and panel discussions.
“Our attendees look forward to participating in this intensive educational program, which features new developments in preventing and managing conditions that can be associated with long-lasting consequences in the neonate,” said the conference’s co-director, Eduardo Bancalari, M.D., professor of pediatrics and obstetrics and gynecology, and director of the Division of Neonatology.
“Close to 1,100 physicians, nurses, respiratory therapists, industry representatives and faculty from 42 countries attended this year’s conference, and our guest faculty came from five countries,” said an obviously pleased Charles R. Bauer, M.D., professor of pediatrics, obstetrics and gynecology and psychology, associate director of the Division of Neonatology and director of the Early Steps Program, who is the conference’s co-director. “This conference continues to be one of the most respected international medical conferences on newborn medicine, with many of our attendees returning each year.”
As in previous years, 31 graduates of the University of Miami’s Neonatology Fellowship Training Program attended the conference and a special luncheon that was held in their honor. This annual fellows luncheon provides an opportunity for networking, and for each fellow to give an update on their professional and personal accomplishments. It is always one of the highlights of the conference for the UM/Jackson Memorial Hospital neonatal faculty and staff.
